São Bras de Alportel is a peaceful village of 11,000 inhabitants, once the residence of the bishops of the Algarve. On Saturdays, the town comes alive around its market. Its main cultural attractions include the Calçadinha Romana (the remains of the ancient road that linked Rome to Lusitania in ancient times) and the Ethnographic Museum of Algarve Clothing, housed in the former residence of a wealthy cork merchant. Strolling through the town, you'll also notice the stonework of the town hall, the former bishop's palace and the belvederes and chimneys characteristic of local architecture.
