2 kilometers west of Tavira lies Santa Luzia, a small fishing village with a legion of good restaurants, all set up along the main street facing the marsh and the island of Tavira (avenue Duarte Pacheco). Here, fishing for polvo, or octopus, is done by immersing earthen pots on which the owner's number is engraved. As the seabed is sandy, the pots enable the octopus to protect itself and hunt better. They freeze before being fished. Seafood lovers will want to stop off in this village for a tasting session, while others can enjoy the magnificent azulejos that decorate Santa Luzia's many narrow streets.
