The Besaya region is the central axis of Cantabria and the main route from the sea to Castile from Torrelavega to Campoo. In the first century, the Romans built a path that followed the course of the river. It allowed the passage of the legions who came to submit the Cantabres, but later it facilitated the flow of ore extracted from the many existing deposits. This Roman route still exists between Pie and Somaconcha. You can walk it on foot. The region is rich in Romanesque art books. The th century Romanesque church of Silió stands on the river side.
