Located in the Saja-Besaya Natural Park, Bárcena Mayor has no great (mayor) other than its name and reputation. It has less than 80 inhabitants left. In 1979 it was declared Historical and Artistic Ensemble, because in its three or four streets you can see the best preserved popular architecture in Cantabria. Considered the oldest village in Cantabria, if not in Spain, Bárcena Mayor has been turned into a kind of living museum. The municipality is also the starting point for several hikes in the heart of green nature, one of which leads to the summit of Cruz de Fuentes, which rises to 1,275 metres above sea level.
