Founded in the seventh century by the Muslims, it was already a strategic city on the northern border of Al-Andalus and retained this role as the main fortress of the kingdom of Aragon, holding out against that of Castile, throughout the Middle Ages. Known as the "Iron Gate of Aragon", the city developed a flourishing commercial activity thanks to its market and its regular fairs. It is also known as the city of the seven sevens, the city of seven times seven, in reference to the numerous monuments that it houses. Its history can be understood by visiting the remains of the 13th and 14th century walls that surround it.
