Facing the Psiloritis. In the center of the village, the square shelters a kafeneion where some old Cretans quietly talk. There is no particular cachet: one could think at first that the place is deserted, but by staying a little, in the beginning of the evening for example, the show begins, some people settle down in the kafeneion. And it is this moment that chooses the pope to arrive on board his pick-up. Opposite the police station, to the right, a road leads down the hill to the chapel of Agia Anna, which contains the oldest frescoes in Crete (dating from 1225, the date written on the damaged frescoes of the choir).
