About 10 kilometres south-east of Rethymnon, in the hinterland, the small village of Maroulas is made up of beautiful houses dating from the Venetian period (some are Turkish) separated by typical narrow streets. The European Union has included Maroulas in its heritage protection list and offers assistance to owners for the restoration of their houses. In exchange, the beneficiaries commit themselves to renting their property during the holidays for a period of five years. This place is really full of character, not to be missed if you are motorised.
