On the Hania-Rethymnon road, this small town is known for its gentle way of life and the quality of its small bars in the shade of plane trees, at the confluence of the Voutakas and Vrisanos rivers, which provide welcome coolness in summer. You can admire a bridge from the Hellenistic era, as if lost in a bucolic setting. It was destroyed and rebuilt with additions during the Venetian and Ottoman periods. Near the bridge are the remains of a mill (now a bar) and a windmill used to raise water. Vrisses is still famous for its sheep's yoghurt (you can ask for it, with honey, in one of the kafeneia or buy it directly from one of the mini-markets). It's a must on the way to Hora Sfakion and the south coast: when the weather's hot, it's a good place for a drink or to stock up on supplies. The various shops are located on the town's main thoroughfare: an ATM, a gas station, the post office and a bakery with excellent paximadia, needed to make the delicious dakos.
