In 1995, an association was formed to restore the old houses of the village and to open up to tourism that is conscious of the environment and local traditions. About ten locals have renovated their houses according to the rules of traditional art, they can be spotted thanks to their blue sign and are mostly located on the right after the church, going up. A former girls' boarding school has been transformed into a small hotel. The association also offers tourists the opportunity to learn Cretan cooking or dancing. Painting or ceramics courses under the direction of local artists are also given. Moreover, Vamos organizes a popular music festival in August. For pure authenticity, go to Gavalochori, for its delicious restaurant and its women's cooperative selling beautiful kapanelli (lace), or to Aspro, between Almyrida and Vamos, a village that will delight those who have in mind the clichés of the traditional Greek village... In short, explore the villages of the Apokoronas peninsula if purely seaside mass tourism is not your cup of tea.
