Szentendre, one of Hungary's oldest and most beautiful medieval towns, is nestled on the right bank of the Danube at the foot of the Pilis Mountains, about 20 kilometers north of Budapest. The town is modest in size and is perfect for a day trip. It is not uninteresting to consider a longer stay and to extend your stay to Visegrád or Esztergom. This picturesque city (not to be confused with the island of Szentendre) has preserved a mixed character resulting from the different waves of immigration. It has winding alleys, small squares with a Mediterranean atmosphere, Serbian Orthodox churches and baroque-style bourgeois houses. A former artists' colony, the city has become a natural extension of the Hungarian capital and welcomes a large number of visitors from all over the world in the summer (it's almost like being at the foot of the Eiffel Tower!)..
