Located 45 km north of Budapest, Visegrád is a small town, somewhat removed from the tourist crowds, at the height of its glory during the reign of King Mátyás, a great medieval ruler. The ruins of the castle, the oldest in the Danube loop, are impressive. The castle(Felégvár) stands atop its 350 m rocky spur, overlooking the magnificent Danube Bend. The sites to visit are divided between the upper town and the lower town (where you arrive by bus and where restaurants and hotels are concentrated), and take at least 40 minutes to walk or take a cab.
