Balatonfüred, with its 13,000 inhabitants, is a very pleasant seaside resort, the oldest on the north shore of the lake. Seven springs of mineral water came to the ground, making it a Mecca for the sick, with many hospitals.A very old resort. Balaton-füred's hot water springs were already known in the Roman Empire, but it was only at the end of the last century that doctors discovered their benefits in the treatment of cardiovascular problems. This source water is used as a medicinal beverage in different treatments, but also for cures. The Heart Disease Hospital, built in 1810, is located near the source, in a park opposite the lake. In the middle of the nineteenth century, the first elegant villas and rest houses were built, followed later by the major hotels. Today, it is a destination of holidaymakers, rather famillial, for a German-speaking and Hungarian clientele essentially. But Balatonfüred was a long-standing resort of many personalities from the political and artistic world, including Mór Jókai, István Széchenyi, Sándor Kisfaludi, Lujza Blaha, Rabindranath Tagore (who left his name at the seafront promenade), Indira and Rajiv Gandhi, as well as several Nobel Prizes.
