Continuing northwards, some 35 km from Budapest, Vác is a thousand-year-old town on the bank of the Danube, opposite the island of Szentendre (on the left bank of the Danube, unlike the other towns on the Danube bend mentioned in this guide). The episcopal seat of Vác, situated at the foot of the Naszály Hills, is a small town with a few important monuments. They are all grouped around Március tér, a renovated central square that provides a fine example of late Baroque architecture. More confidential and less well served by public transport, it is the least visited of the large stopover towns around the Hungarian capital.
