It became the capital of the island in 1852 by succeeding Teguise, which was too inland. It concentrates nearly half of the island's population, as it is both an administrative centre and a commercial and fishing port. Its 60s architectural disorder was not pleasant to look at, but it has endeavoured to reconstruct a beautiful and long waterfront. This is in addition to the pleasure of its small urban beach of Reducto and the truly Canarian animation of the Charco San Ginés, where bars and restaurants are grouped together. We will visit its museum of contemporary art, an 18th century fortress also refurbished as a restaurant by César Manrique.
