The Guanches called it Ajei and it was the capital of the city in the 18th century and then the military stronghold of Francisco Guerra Caijo and his descendants. Today, San Bartolomé is a small authentic village with white houses and green shutters and is definitely worth a visit. You will be able to visit its Museo del Tanit and the church, which has architectural ornaments of great cultural value. It is between San Bartolomé and Mozaga, in the centre of a crossroads, that you will see the Monumento al Campesino, a sculpture about fifteen metres high, erected by César Manrique in homage to the peasants of his native island.
