It is the historical capital of Fuerteventura and a must when visiting the island. It was founded as soon as it was conquered by Jean de Béthencourt to whom it owes its name. This inland village with scattered white houses nestled in a dry valley remained the capital of Fuerteventura until 1834. In 1593, the city was devastated by Berber pirates. It was not until the 17th century that reconstruction was undertaken. Since then, Betancuria has been able to preserve its ancient and authentic character. At the entrance to the village you will notice the ruins of the Convento and you can also visit one of the many small craft shops.
