This village nestles in an inland valley, sheltered from the wind by beautiful volcanic mountains, with slopes folded like fabric. From the beginning of the 17th century until the middle of the 19th century, La Oliva was the administrative centre of the island and even shared the title of capital of the island with Antigua from 1839 to 1860, taking over from Betancuria before declining in favour of the current capital Puerto del Rosario. It has several examples of colonial houses that can be discovered via a guided tour offered on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Nearby to the north is the Montaña de la Arena, a black and red cone 420 m high.
