The small port city has become a popular seaside resort, the most important after Dubrovnik. Founded by the Greek colony of Epidaurus, it was conquered by the Romans (228 BC) and renamed Civitas Vetus (Cavtat). In the 7th century AD, the city was taken by the Slavs. Some refugees escaped and founded Ragusa. At the beginning of the Renaissance, following the urban plan of the Republic, the Captain's Palace, fortifications, churches and monastery were built. The painter Vlaho Bukovac was born here (1855), while an Art Deco mausoleum for the Račić family by the sculptor Meštrović (1883-1962) stands in the cemetery.
