The island was occupied by Basilian monks as early as 915. In the 11th century, the Benedictines built a monastery and basilica. Legend has it that Richard the Lionheart, returning from his third crusade (1192), was stranded here. He vowed to build a church here if he was saved. In fact, it was to be the cathedral in Dubrovnik! In the 19th century, Napoleonic troops arrived, followed by Maximilian Ferdinand of Habsburg and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium, who built a superb residence here. Crossings every half-hour from 9 a.m., returning at 7:30 p.m. Arrival is via the port of Portoč. You can't stay on the island.
