On a small peninsula, the historic port of Korčula was built on a strategic point of the Pelješac Strait in order, at the time, to control the passage of ships and galleons that spawned in the Adriatic. The fortified harbor city is an important part of Croatian heritage. Until the 17th century, the inhabitants lived inside the walls (14th century). Its ingenious town planning is structured on a main north-south axis, known as fishbone. In summer, on the west side, the gentle wind (maestral) rushes through the straight streets; in winter, on the east side, the violent north wind(bura) is held back by the winding streets.
