The first inhabitants came from the region of Majunga and are of Malagasy origin. You will hear Shibushi spoken there more frequently than Shimaore! You will see its beautiful mosque on your left as you go down from Jimawéni. Poroani was a place of resistance and anti-colonial revolt in the 1850s when the rise of the first plantations led to the multiplication of forced labour. The remains of the old village are still visible on the seashore, the inhabitants having had to abandon their houses to be relocated, until the 1990s, the place being considered too risky in front of the phenomena of high tides.
