Grande-Terre starts from Mamoudzou. The capital of the island, Mamoudzou, with over 71,437 inhabitants (2017), is the largest city. Its agglomeration community includes about 87,285 inhabitants, divided between the commune of Mamoudzou and that of Dembéni, including the villages of Tzoundzou 1 and 2, Passamainty, Vahibé, M'tsapéré, Cavani and Kawéni. They are building everywhere, but to make it a big French city, it lacks a McDonald's, and it is not tomorrow. We feel that Mamoudzou is still an interface between two worlds. Although the nerve center of the island, Mamoudzou is not the first goal of your trip and it would be a pity not to move away from it to explore the different localities. It is however a good base to discover the island and to start feeling the rhythm of life of the Mahorais before succumbing to the call of the bush. One stays there for four main reasons: for work, to avoid the traffic jams that paralyze the northern and eastern entrances of the city in the morning and evening, to be close to the activities and nautical excursions that start from the pontoon, and finally for the possibilities of restoration and accommodation that are still insufficient on the rest of the island or that are quickly full. If the addresses are less charming than in the forest or in the bush, we particularly appreciated the richness of the meetings and exchanges with the various professionals who came from all horizons to work on projects as varied as interesting.
