We come to N'Gouja beach to watch the turtles evolve quietly on the seabed, or to discover its drop-off. This is where you're most likely to see them in Mayotte. A multitude of hundred-year-old baobabs, each bigger and more bizarre than the last, give the site a magical, heavenly feel. One of the island's oldest tourist hotels, Jardin Maore opened as a bed & breakfast in 1978, at a time when there was no water, electricity or roads. Guests arrived by pirogue, in an absolutely wild area. Apart from the road and a power line running along it, little has changed. Nature is as unspoilt as ever, and makis and fruit bats hide here. Remember to follow the instructions to avoid disturbing them! It has to be said that the beach, with its tall baobabs and the drop-off visible from the beach, makes it disconcertingly easy to spot the turtles. While the hotel offers all modern comforts, it remains perfectly integrated into its surroundings, using innovative and local natural materials for the interior decoration of the bungalows. The village linked to N'Gouja is Kani-Kéli, meaning "little Kani". Kani-Bé, or "big Kani", exists next door, but Kani-Kéli has become bigger than its big brother: as proof, a post office has been set up here. There's also an originally designed town hall, as well as handcrafted embroidery.
