Covering more than 3,000 km2, the park was created in an attempt to preserve the very rare species of wild donkey, which the authorities are not even sure currently lives within the protected perimeter. a further 36 mammal species have been recorded, including gerenuk, oryx, zebra and various types of gazelle. In addition to ostriches, which are abundant in the region, 230 bird species are concentrated mainly along the Awash River, the park's boundary. The park, which receives support from the French Cooperation for its future development, has no tourism infrastructure at present.
