Ndangane means "haven" in Wolof. The place is divided into two villages. Ndangane Sambou is the village of the origins, today the one where the fishermen live. You will see there pirogues returning from the bolongs or the sea. It is also here that you can find, sometimes after a long wait, a mail pirogue to reach one of the neighbouring islands such as Mar Lodge. It is best to arrive in the morning before 10 am, which is often the time of departure. The canoe works like a bush taxi: the price of the trip is divided by the number of people, and the departure is given once the boat is full. Barely one kilometre away, the village of Ndangane is much more touristy, with its hotels and restaurants. From its pier, you can rent a pirogue from the GIE des piroguiers. Ndangane is a good base for exploring this part of Saloum. To reach Ndangane de Joal, you can take the beautiful asphalt road from Samba Dia to Fimela, then turn right until you reach the village. There are shortcuts, but without a 4x4 it's a tidal story, and so is your car. The road is sandy, but it passes with a normal car. You can also take the road from Ndangane to Ndiosmone. Less exotic, but much faster, the road being dug "only" in some places. To continue towards the south of Saloum, you can negotiate a pirogue that will take you to Toubacouta. This is an original and pleasant way to tip over to the south side without going around by Samba Dia and Kaolack.
