This private reserve covers 6,000 ha, in the heart of a preserved forest ecosystem on the Gambian border, near the banks of the Delta. If for the time being the protected and electrified area is 2,000 ha, it should be extended to the entire reserve. The owners are South Africans experienced in the management of wild reserves who have the commendable initiative to reintroduce here all kinds of animals, some of which are very rare, but not predators for the moment, to give nature time to develop. In total, the Fathala Reserve has several giraffes and buffaloes, some white rhinos, Derby elk (very rare), zebras and warthogs, but also crocodiles and a wild hyena. Soon other zebras and antelopes (water buck and Koudou) will be reintroduced. As for predators, only 6 lions aged nearly 3 years live here in captivity for the moment, and tourists can take a walk with them on the reserve. This creation of a private reserve comparable to that of Bandia is commendable, and it is important to encourage it because few projects exist in West Africa for the reintroduction of bush animals, particularly for economic reasons, whereas in East and Southern Africa, this natural heritage constitutes a real financial windfall. In addition, the creation of the reserve with a luxury lodge and a restaurant creates jobs in this remote region, which is not very dynamic and involves professional training for the locals.
