A stopover in the heart of Sine culture. Mbissel was the first village to be settled by the Guelwaar dynasty, a Mandingo aristocracy that came to the fore in the 14th century. Meissa Wali Dione became the first bour (king) of the Sine, and with his army of captives, under the control of Ceddo warriors, he extended his living space. Emile Pinet Laprade and Louis Faidherbe put an end to the Guelwaar hegemony over the Sine, forcing the bour Coumba Ndoffène Diouf to accept the French protectorate that was being established in the surrounding area. The tomb of Meissa Wali Dione and his famous elephant, evoked in a poem by Léopold Sédar Senghor, can be seen here.
