Uxmal, which in the Mayan language means "built three times", is one of the most important archaeological sites on the Yucatán Peninsula and, along with Chichen Itzá, is a World Heritage Site. Despite its name, Uxmal was built five times and exercised its power for four centuries, from 600 to 1000 AD. The Spaniards who knew these ruins gave the buildings their own names, such as the quadrilateral of the Nuns for example. The Count of Waldeck gave the first description with his own embellishments, but the ruins were not excavated until 1929 by Franz Blom
