The Loltún caves - from the Mayan lol, "flower", and tún, "stone" - are located 8 kilometers from Oxkutzcab. They are the largest on the Yucatán Peninsula. Evidence suggests that they were used as campsites 11,000 years ago by the nomadic tribes who settled in the region. They may also have been occupied continuously, particularly when the ancestors of the Maya, the local inhabitants, became sedentary, started growing crops and building their first towns. The caves may also have been used during the Caste War by Mayans fleeing from the whites and mestizos.
