Hochob was also described by Teobert Maler in 1887 and it was he himself who gave it its Mayan name "place of the ears of corn", as the inhabitants of the surrounding area used the temples to store the fruit of their precious crops. Some 1,500 years ago, the first inhabitants settled on a hill about 30 meters high, which they leveled to build their first residences on top of it, which would gradually replace temples and public buildings. The slopes are laid out as terraces where domestic units are built in perishable materials, but also a rainwater management system.
