Located between Mérida and Valladolid, Chichén Itzá is one of the largest and most imposing archaeological areas in the entire Yucatán Peninsula, and is a World Heritage Site. Etymologically, its name means "the city by the well of the Itzáes", in reference to its cenote as well as to the people who ruled it.
