In the northeast of the Chenes area, Santa Rosa Xtampak ("old walls" in Maya) was the most important city during the Late Classic. Its 9 km2 included ten ceremonial places and about ten thousand inhabitants. The first humans settled a few centuries before our era on this natural elevation of about forty meters high, which was gradually flattened and whose slopes were developed into terraces. The buildings that have survived the invasion of the vegetation have magnificent ornaments in a very marked chenesque style, although some of them stand out because of their Puuc influences. Chultunes, artificial water reservoirs, are scattered around the site.
