Celestún is a beautiful small coastal village, 90 km west of Merida. Some swear that its beaches are the most beautiful in Yucatán, while others prefer those of Progreso. This difference of opinion is probably due to the day and time of the day and time of the visit to Celestún. But it has an attraction that Progreso does not have: the area is a true ornithological sanctuary. Every year thousands of species of birds - ducks, herons, pelicans - and especially a large colony of wild flamingos come to spend the winter in the estuary on the edge of the village. This has led the Mexican government to classify it as a protected natural area. Access is controlled to ensure the protection of the fauna and flora, but a number of service providers are allowed to take boat trips on the lagoon for ecotourism purposes. The observation of the pink flamingos and their flight is a fantastic sight; a must see during your stay in the peninsula.
