Ticul, halfway between Oxkutzcab and Muna, is nicknamed "la perla del sur", the pearl of the South, because of its geographical location in the southern part of the peninsula. A city of pre-Colombian Mayan civilization, it has been continuously inhabited at least since the 7th century B.C. It is home to the convent and church of San Antonio de Padua, which date from the early 17th century and whose interior was looted during the Caste Wars. Ticul can be a good gastronomic stop if you visit the Loltún Caves or the archaeological site of Labná, and prefer the small typical canteens rather than the big tourist restaurants.
