The city of Sayil, "the Place of the Leafcutter Ants", was one of the main cities in pre-Hispanic times, since at its peak during the Classic Terminal (800-1000 AD), it covered some 4 square kilometres and had a population of nearly 17,000. A walk through the forest takes you to El Mirador, with its ridged roof. The pelota court is 1,500 metres to the east. The Palacio, at the far end of the site, is poorly signposted and poorly located on the maps. To reach it, you have to walk a bit through a bare jungle, which gives the impression of being an explorer discovering a fabulous lost city
