This city, which reached its apogee during the Late Classic period (800-1000 AD), is located 25 km southeast of Oxkutzcab. The archaeological area is not very extensive, but it is worth the detour. One of the peculiarities of the development of this site is that the most important buildings of the town were built on hilltops, on the slopes of which the Maya then arranged terraces to enhance the grandeur of the constructions. In the Mayan language, Chacmultún means 'mound of red stone' in reference to the colour of the façades of the buildings, which also provides a soft contrast with the shades of the vegetation.
