Once known as Case Navire, because its magnificent bay protected boats from the wrath of the sea, this small town was a favorite of the first French settlers, attracted by the beauty of its bay. Since the 1960s, the town that inherited the name of the deputy who signed the abolition of slavery has been developing rapidly, taking advantage of the mountainous terrain it occupies as far as Fonds-Saint-Denis and the Carbet peaks. The higher mornes, such as La Colline and La Démarche, are prime residential sites, while the Schœlcher seafront is a pleasant place for families to stroll.
