Its name is a combination of Amerindian heritage: case (house) and Pilote, a Caribbean chief beloved by the French. Close to Saint-Pierre, the town has been at the heart of all the conflicts that have marked Martinique's colonial history. The only thing it managed to save from this turbulent period was its 17th-century church. The heart of the village still retains some of the vestiges of its colonial past: perpendicular streets, arranged around a central square, intersect at the water's edge. Freshly restored (covered market, church square and beachfront), the little town is charming.
