Virieu, also known as Virieu-sur-Bourbre, is home to 1,100 inhabitants. The town is located in the heart of the Terres froides, a natural region of the Isère that extends from Bourgoin-Jallieu to Colombe and is known for its relatively harsh climate in winter. It is around the halls created in the 15th century and rebuilt in 1817 that remain the streets and the most picturesque houses of the village. The main interest of Virieu lies nevertheless in the proximity of its castle of the 11th century particularly highlighted by its French gardens. The proximity of the lake of Paladru also brings to the village a certain tourist passage.
