Castle of the XIth century founded on a motte castrale, preserving the medieval aspect with towers and curtains, animations on the spot.
Built in the 11th century from a motte castrale, this fortified house grew until the 18th century. The castle remained 200 years in the family of Virieu, passed from hand to hand, before returning to its original family in 1874. Uninhabited for more than 50 years, it was restored in 1924. It is still occupied by the descendants of the de Virieu family. In spite of its numerous alterations, the castle has kept its medieval aspect, with its towers and curtains. In addition to the visits, many animations are proposed all year long.

Une belle découverte
En rentrant dans la commune de Virieu, on ne s'attend pas à trouver un tel château en haut de la colline. Dans ce cadre bucolique, on entre par une grande cour extérieure, avec à gauche les jardins à la française et au fond le château. Nous avons choisi une visite guidée et c'était très intéressant. La guide nous a expliqué l'historique du château et nous a raconté des anecdotes sur chaque pièce visitée (la chapelle, la cuisine, la chambre du roi, le grand salon, le petit salon ...). A voir.

Visite du château et du jardin à l'occasion du 'rendez-vous au jardin'. La visite du château est chouette. Ce n'est pas un château vide! L'histoire du château et de la famille permet de mieux comprendre les environs. Les 45 min passent très vite. Par contre, j'ai été un peu déçue par la visite du jardin. Je m'attendais peut être à un véritable jardin à la française...
