If its inhabitants are called Montagnards, the commune of Montagnieu does not rise above 584 m in altitude. In the heart of the Lyon-Grenoble-Chambéry triangle, it stretches over a plateau known as the Terres froides. In the local heritage, the castle of Châtelard (private, can not be visited), which dates from the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries, is partially registered as a historical monument. Hikers will enjoy walking in the woods of Châtelard and spanning the Bier, a modest local river, crossing the small stone point Sainte-Marguerite. To see, a complex sundial built by the abbot Kart, priest of Montagnieu.
