Until the 1880s, Saint-Yorre, a small village founded in Roman times, had less than 500 inhabitants. Its development was closely linked to the waters for which it is now famous. In the 1850s, the pharmacist Nicolas Larbaud (1822-1889) decided to start drilling on the land of Saint-Yorre. He discovered a spring and started to bottle his waters. Other entrepreneurs did the same, and soon nearly 100 springs were discovered on the territory of Saint-Yorre. As this new industry developed, the town's population grew. Who says bottling says bottles: why not make them on the spot? Thus was born at the end of the 19th century the Saint-Yorre glass factory, active until 1914, then requisitioned during the war. Today, nearly 200 million bottles are produced there (Saint-Yorre, Vichy-Célestins and Chaleldon waters). The town has about 2,500 inhabitants. The Via Allier greenway links it to Billy via Vichy in 27 kilometers.
