Sub-prefecture of Puy-de-Dôme, this town of 15,000 inhabitants is located at the extreme south of the department. The first written document attesting to a city in this place dates from the 6th century. The construction of the Saint-Austremoine abbey-church, a Romanesque building to visit without fail, lasted throughout the 12th century. The town centre retains an undeniable medieval charm, where traces of a rich past can be found on every street corner, as far as the Charlemagne Bridge, built by the Emperor on his way to Spain to fight. On Saturdays, a market dating from the 16th century is still frequented by producers from all over the region.
