From the Roubion, the road climbs steeply to the perched village of Le Poët-Célard. You have to leave your car at the edge of the village to walk through the medieval streets that rise up to the admirably restored castle. Saved from abandonment and ruin in the 1980s by a group of enthusiasts, Le Poët-Célard (150 inhabitants) is now one of the prides of the Bourdeaux region. Its castle (16th and 17th centuries) was built on the ruins of a medieval fortress of the Counts of Valentinois. A charming stopover, especially in summer, when the Comptoirs du Poët area hosts a large exhibition-sale of local crafts.
