Thiepval, on the border of Picardy and Artois, was the scene of intense fighting during the Battle of the Somme. With losses estimated at 58,000 men (20,000 of whom were killed), Britain suffered the greatest military tragedy in its history. The fighting for the capture of the village took place from1 July to 26 September 1916. Thiepval was lost on 25 March 2018 during the German offensive in Picardy before being definitively retaken on 24 August 1918.
