With its rich architectural heritage, Péronne is a surprising town steeped in history. Situated at the confluence of the Somme and Cologne rivers, the town's pleasant natural setting, with its ponds and shady banks, is ideal for strolling or boating, and even welcomes a few yachtsmen to its marina (17 berths year-round or dry docking in a nearby shed). But Péronne was also a stronghold in the past: the Porte de Bretagne still bears witness to this. Almost all the kings of France came or stayed here. Occupied by the German army in August 1914, the town was bombarded by the French for over eight months. Finally evacuated on September 2, 1918, Péronne was partly destroyed. Now rebuilt, Péronne has become an essential stop on the remembrance circuit, and is a highly regarded place of remembrance, with the Historial in the town center. But Péronne is also (and above all) a great place to live, stroll and wander. With green spaces, historic buildings and a host of quality addresses, there's no shortage of things to do and see, whether for an afternoon or a few days, alone or with the family! In short, don't hesitate to linger a while, to let yourself be guided by your desires, to explore this troubling duality between yesterday and today: chances are, you'll want to know more and more!
