Between Saumur and Montreuil-Bellay, this pretty little medieval village overlooks the Thouet and Dive valleys. It owes its name to the lord knight Macouard who, in the 10th century, had his manor built on this soft limestone hill serving as a natural defence. There are several buildings erected between the 15th and 19th centuries, a pretty manor house and the Maison de la soie d'Anjou. Away from the main roads, the town has managed to preserve, through its architecture, the traces of a rich past and cultivate the land, including wines of appellation saumur-champigny. You can enjoy beautiful walks along the paths that are partly taken by the GR3
