Thouars, population 13,800, sits between Poitiers (65 km) and Cholet (60 km). Its fascinating, eventful history only really began in the 8th century. A solid stronghold of Aquitaine, it was destroyed by Pepin the Short in 762, and from the 9th to the 14th century was the fiefdom of a powerful line of viscounts, the Thouars, before becoming a duchy for the La Trémoïlle family in 1563. The scene of conflicts between the Capetians and Plantagenets, then of the Hundred Years' War, hard hit by the Wars of Religion and the Vendée, and battered by a series of natural disasters in the 18th century, Thouars has nevertheless preserved an extraordinary heritage.
