For a very long time, from its belvedere (caused by the fault running from the tip of Brittany to the south of the Vendée), Savenay has watched for possible attackers. The medieval period has left traces, with the presence of castles like the Matz and the Touchelais, convents like the Cordeliers (1419) and the old presbytery. The French Revolution, with the revolt of the Vendeans, whose tragic Galerne's journey ended with the battle of Savenay in 1793, following which 3,000 Chouans were massacred by the Republicans. The First World War led the American army (1917-1919) to build its important military hospital in France.
