The exceptional geographical location of this rocky islet on the Loire explains the development of its port. Paimbœuf became the outport of Nantes, where sailboats and schooners engaged in incessant traffic, while privateers and slavers built beautiful mansions on the quayside. On the eve of the French Revolution, Nantes became a prosperous town of 10,000 inhabitants, making it the second-largest city in the département. But competition from St-Nazaire and the silting-up of the Loire River contributed to its decline. Of this prestigious past, the colorful buildings of the shipowners and the memories of its illustrious guests remain: Napoleon I, the Duc de Bourbon and Stendhal.
